Women Empowerment-Themed Spin Class

The ��tv Feminist Legal Association (DFLA) is partnering with the Schulich Mental Health and Wellness Society to host a women empowerment-themed spin class.

Proceeds will be donated to Wellness Within, a volunteer-based non-profit organization that provides support to clients in pregnancy, for abortion, childbirth, infant feeding, and newborn care. They facilitate workshops and education sessions for the public, students, health care professionals, and women, trans, and nonbinary people who have experienced criminalization.

Schulich Law Professor Rob Currie, KC, Viscount Bennett Professor of Law, invites you to a panel discussion on global and Canadian anti-corruption efforts featuring a proposal for an international anti-corruption court, as well as a look at how shadowy Catholic organization Opus Dei has avoided accountability for corruption.

Chaired by Currie, the Colloquium will feature Gareth Gore, financial journalist and author of OPUS: The Cult of Dark Money, Human Trafficking and Right-Wing Conspiracy Inside the Catholic Church, and Allan Rock, former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations and President Emeritus of the University of Ottawa.

The Runnymede Society, the Schulich Law & Tech Society, and the Schulich Tax and Financial Law Association invite you to a discussion between Xavier Foccroulle Ménard, a banking and finance expert lawyer with Stikeman Elliott LLP, and Doug Harris, general counsel, director of Policy and Market Regulation, and secretary to the Nova Scotia Securities Commission.

This event, moderated by Brendan Peters, partner at Delex LLP, will introduce students to some of the legal issues involved with cryptocurrency and decentralized finance in practice.

The talk will explore benefits, limitations, and concerns of regulating these emerging areas, as well as discussing the positive applications of emerging financial technologies and innovations, and the extent (if any) to which the public needs to be protected from novel financial innovations.

Students will learn how FinTech works in practice and how the law can be leveraged and interact with financial innovation and technologies, and the role that government can play in advancing — or hindering — innovation in finance.

These two experts in their field come from radically different backgrounds, in government and academia, and private industry. A lively and intellectually rigorous exchange of views is expected.

This lecture will be led by Professor Emeritus Michael Lynk, Western University.

��tv the Lecture: This annual public lecture and intensive short course in labour and employment law was established to honour the memory of former Professor and Dean Innis Christie, QC, and his accomplishments in the field of labour and employment law.

��tv the Topic: Freedom of association has proven to be the most difficult section of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for the Supreme Court of Canada to provide a coherent and meaningful guarantee.

In contrast to the other core constitutional rights and freedoms – including expression, religion, equality, and life, liberty and security – the dozen rulings by the Court since 1987 on the associational freedom have been marked by widely fluctuating interpretations, hesitancies, advances, and retreats, as well as the application of more onerous constitutional tests.

In Canada, freedom of association has been largely understood as a labour right. Does this help to explain why the Court has been so challenged in offering a lucid, liberal, and dependable approach to one of our most fundamental rights?
