The Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development is pleased to continue its Instructor Spotlight series by celebrating a valuable instructor in our program. Let’s get to know 18-year home inspection veteran, Adam Hannon, as he answers these questions:

1) What’s the biggest change in your field in recent years?

The most significant change in recent years has been the integration of advanced technology into home inspections. Tools like thermal imaging, drones, and advanced air quality testing have significantly enhanced the thoroughness and accuracy of inspections. Additionally, the rise of online platforms for scheduling, reporting, and client communication has streamlined the process, making it more efficient for both inspectors and clients.

2) How do you unwind?

I enjoy spending quality time with my family, particularly exploring the outdoors with my three children. I’m also a fan of cottaging—escaping to the serene landscapes of Ontario is one of my favorite ways to recharge. 

3) What’s the most surprising thing we might see on your resume/CV?

One surprising aspect of my resume is my background in sales. Before transitioning into home inspection, I spent over a decade running a small sales agency before venturing into a relationship with a renovation company by performing cost estimates for renovation projects. These experiences provided me with a deep understanding of client needs and effective communication, which have been invaluable in my inspection career.

4) What’s the best aspect of teaching with the Faculty?

The opportunity to mentor and guide the next generation of home inspectors is very gratifying. Seeing students develop their skills and confidence, knowing that I’m contributing to the professionalism and quality of the industry, is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, teaching at ±«Óãtv is particularly fulfilling because of the university’s outstanding reputation across the country. It’s an honour to be associated with such a prestigious institution and be part of a faculty committed to excellence.

5) What do you think the future holds for the home inspection profession, especially in terms of the job market?

The future of the home inspection profession remains promising. While the job market can fluctuate based on market conditions and real estate trends, the need for qualified home inspectors remains strong as buyers continue to prioritize the safety and condition of their investments.

The industry is largely entrepreneurial by nature, offering great opportunities for those who are willing to adapt and build their own business or work within smaller operations. While a few larger companies employ 5-15 inspectors, these tend to be the exception.

Several factors will shape the future of the profession:

• Increasing consumer awareness: Homebuyers and sellers are becoming more informed about the value of inspections, recognizing the critical role they play in protecting investments and ensuring safety.
• Technological advancements: Emerging tools like drones, thermal imaging, sewer scans, and electronic reporting are making inspections more efficient and comprehensive. Inspectors who adopt these innovations will have an edge in delivering high-quality services.
• Diversification of services: Expanding into specialized areas such as air quality testing, mold inspections, or energy efficiency assessments can create new revenue streams and set inspectors apart in a competitive market.
• While the real estate market may experience fluctuations, home inspectors who invest in ongoing education, adopt new technologies, and offer specialized services are well-positioned for long-term success. Staying updated on industry standards and being flexible to meet the evolving needs of clients is key.
