Riley Memorial Lecture with Dr. Andone Lavery

The Gordon Arthur Riley Memorial Lecture is an annual to biennial lecture series established in 1999 to honour the late Gordon A. Riley, Professor of Oceanography and Director of the Institute of Oceanography (now our Department of Oceanography).

Invited speakers are nominated, selected and hosted by the Department of Oceanography Student Association (DOSA).

We are pleased to announce this year that Dr. Andone Lavery will be joining us from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute to present the 20th Gordon A. Riley Memorial Lecture.

Dr. Lavery is an acoustical oceanographer who studies how we can utilize sound in exploring, understanding, and monitoring changes in the ocean such as sea level rise, coral bleaching, shifts in ocean circulation, anoxia, and ocean acidification.

Dr. Lavery’s presentation “Towards a Transparent Ocean: Telltale acoustic signatures of a changing ocean” will focus on the multitude of approaches taken to using sound to understand our changing ocean, the advances in platforms used to enable these studies, the expansion of global ocean observing systems that include measurements of sound as an essential ocean variable, and the enormous complexities in interpreting acoustic signals in a dynamic and evolving ocean landscape.

Time and location:

We will have a morning coffee and cake session from 9:30am to 10:30am in the 5th floor Oceanography Lounge.

The seminar will take place from 11:30am to 1:00pm on March 11th, 2025, in room C242 of the LSC.

There will also be a reception afterwards with light refreshments from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the 5th floor Oceanography Lounge.
