Halifax, NS – February 10, 2015 – The Directors of the MacEachen Institute for Policy and Government announced today a donation to ±«Óătv University in the amount of $2.25 million. The donation will be used to establish a public policy and governance institute at ±«Óătv in the name of the Hon. Allan J. MacEachen.
The MacEachen Institute considered a number of universities and following the evaluation of proposals, ±«Óătv University became their first choice. As one of Canada’s most prestigious research-intensive universities, attracting students from across Canada and around the world, ±«Óătv is well placed to make a significant national contribution to public policy and governance debates.
“I am pleased and honoured that this contribution has been made to establish an Institute in my name at ±«Óătv University,” said Mr. MacEachen, Canada’s first Deputy Prime Minister, a long-time member of Parliament, Senator and representative of Nova Scotia in the Government of Canada; “I look forward with great interest to the work of the Institute and to a positive contribution to public policy debate in Canada.”
“±«Óătv University is privileged to partner with the MacEachen Institute in the development of an institute focused on public policy and governance,” said ±«Óătv President, Dr. Richard Florizone. “We see this partnership as an opportunity to build on the significant legacy established by the Hon. Allan J. MacEachen as we move forward with plans for an institute that will engage students, scholars, governments, policy makers, and community members in significant public policy research on a national scale.”
The MacEachen Institute for Public Policy & Government is a non-partisan federally incorporated not for profit corporation, formed through a grant of funds from the For the Public Good Trust 2011 to honour the legacy of the Hon. Allan J. MacEachen and pursue his interest in progressive public policy. The Directors of the Institute are: Mr. David Cameron of Halifax, NS, Ms. Carole Gillies of Antigonish, NS and Mr. David Thompson of Dartmouth, NS.
