Certificate in the Foundations of Digital Innovation

We understand that planning too far into the future right now can be challenging. We also understand that you are eager to develop your skills, knowledge and experience through the Master of Digital Innovation (MDI).

With that in mind, we have developed an option that enables you to obtain a Certificate in the event that you are unable to complete your full MDI program for whatever reason.

The Certificate in the Foundations of Digital Innovation provides you with recognition that you have completed the core elements of the MDI program by taking the following schedule:

ECMM 6000 Overview of Electronic Commerce

Electronic commerce deals with the conduct of business using computer and communication technologies. It takes place in an environment shaped by government and business policies as well as social attitudes. The class examines issues in global electronic commerce and an understanding of the impact of the interaction and interdependencies of technology, business, and policy on electronic commerce.

HINF 6101 Health Information: Flow and Use

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the field of health informatics, in particular highlighting the determinants and use of health information—i.e. how it is generated by different clinical tasks; how is it digitally stored and shared in keeping with security and privacy considerations; how does it flow within a healthcare system; and how is it used by health information systems to provide targeted services to healthcare professionals, patients, administrators and decision makers.

DGIN 5201 Digital Transformation

Digital technologies are nowadays critical to new product development and business transformation. Digital Innovation refers to “the carrying out of new combinations of digital

technologies and physical components to produce novel products, processes, and services􏰀 (Yoo 3 et al., 2010) . The concept of digital innovation entails not only ‘Digitization’ of physical products or traditional services but it also requires firms to revisit their use of corporate digital resources, such as IT (Information Technology) assets and capabilities.

This core digital innovation course focuses on the design and management of digital innovation projects for both public sector and private sector organizations. Specifically, this course provides students with knowledge and skills to initiate and execute digital innovation and transformation projects in existing organizations or new start-ups.

DGIN 5100 Foundations in Web Technologies

This hands-on course examines the technologies and infrastructure required to support digital innovation. The course examines the major components of the information technology infrastructure, such as networks, databases and data warehouses, electronic payment, security, and human-computer interfaces. The course covers key web concepts and skills for designing, creating and maintaining websites, such as Grid Theory, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX theory, PHP, SQL and NoSQL databases. Other principles such as Web Accessibility, Usability and User eXperience, as well as best security practices, are explored in detail through a combination of lectures, in-class examples, individual lab work and assignments, and a final group project.

DGIN 5200 Foundations in Business

DGIN 5200 is suitable for graduate students from a variety of backgrounds. The overall aim of this course is to develop a high level understanding of the dynamics of innovation, the distribution and outcomes of the strategic management of innovation and the relationships that are important in developing high-impact organizations.

The course is in three parts. The first part of the course is designed to introduce an understanding of patterns of change in technology and markets. In this component students will examine innovation strategies during a disruptive market shift.

The second part of the course is designed to address the distribution and sources of innovation and how companies appropriate value from entrepreneurial opportunities. The main evaluated component of this part of the course will be a team-based exercise screening local fast growth, early-stage businesses.

The third part of the course is designed to introduce key ideas in constructing and articulating strategies for developing high-impact, entrepreneurial organizations. In this last part, students will be evaluate and create materials for an innovation, relate it to frameworks from the course and pitch to the class.

DGIN 5300 Law, Policy, and Ethics in Emerging Technologies

Emerging technologies—such as digital media, the “internet of things”, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and financial tech—are playing an increasingly central role in how individuals live and interact with each other; how businesses innovate and create new opportunities; and how governments function and serve their populations. But the unrestrained development and use of these technologies can raise complex legal, policy, and ethical challenges, with serious implications for human rights and the public interest. This course offers students an introduction to foundational legal, policy, and ethical issues raised by emerging technologies in a variety of contexts, with special consideration for digital innovation and commerce. On completion, students will be able to better identify, understand, and critically asses these issues and also more effectively manage and resolve them in the course of the professional pursuits.

DGIN 5400 Statistics for Health Informatics

This course covers essential statistical methods for medical research. Topics include descriptive analysis techniques and basic principles of statistical inference for comparison of means, proportions and investigation of relationships between variables using regression modeling techniques. Students will also become familiar with nonparametric tests and power and sample size calculations.
