Exam Conduct Expectations

In the online environment, it is especially helpful to communicate with students your expectations for their conduct around exams. This includes detailed instructions on what supports and resources they can access during the exam, as well as specifics on what is not allowed. Is the exam open book or closed book? Is the exam due at a fixed time after which no submissions are allowed or is there a grace period? Answers to these questions and details on allowable resources should be communicated to students.

You might consider specifying the following exam conduct expectations:

  • Open book vs. closed book (see Page 9 of the AI Toolkit under “”)
  • Which resources are allowed, and which aren't, such as:
  • Course textbook
  • Materials from course Brightspace site
  • Calculator or other tools
  • Software (e.g., Microsoft Word)
  • Dictionary or other texts
  • Internet searches (Google, Chegg, etc.)
  • Consultations with other students
  • Whether or not students can take screenshots or otherwise make copies of any exam contents
  • Due date and time (including time zone) of exam
  • Whether students must complete exam in one sitting or are allowed (and have time) to take a break midway
  • Policy on what happens if exam materials are submitted after the cut-off date/time
  • How students can contact you for clarification during the exam (see Communicating During the Exam)
