Student impact was celebrated during the 15th Annual SAIL Excellence in Student Leadership Awards earlier this month.Ìý With over 70 nominations in 12 categories from Environmental Leadership to Student Government, these awards recognize students who have excelled in leadership and have demonstrated commitment to their co-curricular activities, fellow students, staff and faculty and have shown outstanding pride in their work and campus.
Global Citizenship – Maddie Empey
This award distinguishes a student who has demonstrated an active commitment to internationalization of the campus, promotion of multiculturalism, pursuit of social justice and civic engagement within the campus and surrounding community.
This year’s recipient, Maddie Empey, is known for her dedication and involvement in global projects that enhance the daily lives of others. Maddie, known to be a deeply capmpassionate and caring persoon, has demonstrated exceptional growth in her leadership abilities during her four years of study at the Faculty of Agriculture.
Maddie has become a confident student leader through her extensive campus and community involvement. In the past academic year Maddie has volunteered as Co-Chair of the Dal AC WUSC Local Committee, Co-Chair for organizing the WUSC Symposium 2019 and Committee Member/Organizer for Dal LEAD 2019 and the East Coast Student Leadership Conference.Ìý She has done many other activites under these roles such as facilitated the entrace and transition of two refugee students to the Dal AC over the past two years, organized three student conferences with over 300 attendees, orchestrated two bakesale fundraisers for WUSC and conducted several information booths on the benefits of fair trade products on developing countries and on WUSC’s involvement in supporting refugee students in Canada and on campus.
She has also studied and worked abroad in Ethiopia and South Africa through Dal AC and continues to bring a global perspective to the campus and promote a worldly mindset in others through her involvement on- and off-campus.
