OACC Director's Message

The organic movement is alive and well as demonstrated by the over 2,500 participants at the Organic World Congress (OWC) in New Delhi, India. I had many opportunities to connect with organic leaders from around the world including farmers, scientists, government, NGO representatives and businesses. I attended a preconference on how organic innovation can be applied to developing countries. Perhaps the most inspiring news at the OWC was the announcement that Sikkim, a state in India, has now become fully organic. We heard organic sector leaders from around the world discuss and debate key issues facing the future of organic agriculture. The tradeshow Biofach India provided an amazing display of organic products from locally adapted seed to organic hair colour. After the conference I attended IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) Organics International’s General Assembly where the membership elects the Board, and votes on key motions and positions that guide the future of the organization and movement. After the meetings I had the amazing opportunity to have a short visit at a biodynamic village in the Himalayan mountains. Travelling to the OWC provides not only opportunities to meet with others inspired by the organic movement, but also an opportunity to experience culture in another country. In New Delhi you could see the disparity between the wealthy and poor who are trying to simply survive, but at the same time I saw tremendous richness in the simplicity of life in the Himalayas. It is such a privilege to have had this opportunity and I will ponder it through the holiday season. I wish everyone a very happy holiday and a fulfilling year to come.
