"The War in Ukraine and the Global Crisis"
The Department of Russian Studies invites you to join an online conversation about the ongoing war in Europe with Prof. Yuliya Ilchuk (Stanford University), moderated by Prof. Yuri Leving (±«Óătv) via Zoom.
Time: Mar 7, 2022, 5 - 5:45 PM
Open for students and faculty of ±«Óătv University
Prof. Yuliya Ilchuk (Stanford) is the author of Nikolai Gogol: Performing Hybrid Identity (University of Toronto Press, 2021). Studies of hybridity have informed her recent research projects on othering, protest culture, and memory on the move as socio-cultural responses to the war in Eastern Ukraine. In Ilchuk's most recent book project, tentatively titled “Future in the Past: Memory, Culture, and Identity in Post-Soviet Russia and Ukraine,” she works on the comparative analysis of the memory culture in Russia and Ukraine and examines the parallel development of the two related cultures through their rivalry over the control and dissemination of memory of the Soviet past and recent present.

Statement on the war in Ukraine:
Department of Russian Studies, ±«Óătv University
±«Óătv University has a long tradition of teaching Russian literature, history, and culture to several generations of Canadians. As scholars and students, we have dedicated our professional lives to the study of Russia and East Europe. Along with our colleagues in Canada and abroad, we condemn the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine as a direct violation of international law. As scholars of this region, we are appalled by the distortions of the situation circulated on Russian state media. We grieve for the victims of the ongoing attacks and for those killed over the past eight years. We stand with all those in Russia, Ukraine, and beyond who oppose this war. As one of the oldest Slavic programs in Canada we strongly believe in the future of cooperation between our people and express our solidarity with the citizens of neighboring states who stand for peace and freedom.
