Located right next to the main entry to the Idea Building, the Heavy Protype lab is a key location for student teams. This is where many teams work collaboratively to build their competition entries.
How do I gain access:
Request a tour and training session with the Shop Supervisor (Mark MacDonald). These sessions are available between 7am and 2pm. Following the tour, you need to demonstrate to the Shop Supervisor that you:
- understand machine shop operating practices
- have WHMIS training
- understand the instructions for the use of hand tools
- understand the training on specific machines (not all are available for student use, see list below)
- have fire safety orientation
- When applicable, that you are trained and equipped for the specialized room for paint spraying etc.
Following the training, when can I access the area
Access to the Heavy Prototype Lab is available from 8am to 10pm. Please note, there must be two people in the shop at all times
What machines can I use:
Machines available to students following their training session
- Hand grinders
- Manual hand tools
- Restricted access within Composite Lab
- Can request that technicians perform tasks on equipment that students cannot use
Machines operated by technicians only, but which you can request work be performed on
- MIG & TIG Welding equipmen
- 3’x3’ Waterjet cutter
- 2T Overhead Gantry Cranes
- Machine lathes of various sizes
- Surface grinder
- CNC Milling Machine – MASS VF2YT
- Sand blaster
- Universal milling machine (CAT40)
- Vertical knew mills
- CNC lathe – Tormach Slant Pro 15L
How can students access the shop?
Team leads given key card access via banner numbers
- Leads are responsible for proving full orientation of the shop, WHMIS, machine training, and proper PPE
- Leads are then responsible for assuring that all team members working in the shop under their supervision understand the safety requirements of the space
