Dr. Kimmerly’s is the Director of the Autonomic Cardiovascular Control and Exercise Lab. His research focuses on the impacts that cardiorespiratory fitness and objective habitual activity patterns have on heart and blood vessel health throughout the life course. Interactions between how the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems influence heart and artery function are also explored. His human research program involves the use of vascular ultrasonography, non-invasive and continuous blood pressure recordings (via finger photoplethysmography), heart rate variability analyses, as well as microneurographic recordings of sympathetic vasoconstrictor nerve activity. Whenever possible, the potential impacts of biological sex and female sex hormone levels on these outcomes are assessed.
