MSc Physiotherapy
The MScPT curriculum prepares the graduate student to be an autonomous health professional in a variety of interdisciplinary health care settings. Emphasis is placed on a collaborative, reasoned and evidence-based approach to practice, which manifests the integration of scientific knowledge, physiotherapy skills, and professional behaviours. The curriculum is delivered in an environment of inquiry that fosters reflective practice, confidence in problem-solving, a social conscience, and patient/family-centered communication essential to becoming effective physiotherapists in an ever-changing and complex health care environment.
Multiple educational principles are embedded in the curriculum to integrate basic and clinical sciences, advance professional development, promote evidence-based practice, and foster both intra and interprofessional collaboration. In keeping with tenets of adult learning, diverse and innovative delivery methods (e.g., interactive clinical labs and lectures, student-led tutorials, and online discussions, e-instruction of course delivery and review) are employed to address the wide-ranging learning needs of the student body and the varied nature of curricular content.
Clinical placements are integrated within our academic curriculum. There are five placements, six weeks in duration that account for over 1100 hours of clinical experience. Atlantic Canada is the School of Physiotherapy's Clinical catchment area, so students in the MScPT program should be ready to travel around New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, as they experience a great diversity in culture, practice areas, practice settings and physiotherapy work with people of all ages.
