The Norman Newman Fund, established in 1987, has resulted in the creation of the Norman H. Newman Family Business Award. This scholarship is offered as a tribute to Mr. Newman's record of leadership in business and the community.
The award supports an annual case competition for Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Management and MBA students beyond the first year of their program. Students are expected to develop and present their original work relating to management issues faced by a family firm.Ìý Ìý
To Enter
Please submit six (6) hard copies of your submission by 4:30 pm on Monday, February 11, 2019 to Albert James Room 5092 of the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building.ÌýÌýSubmissions do not need to be bound, but must be accompanied by a .ÌýÌý
Multiple authors are permitted, however in cases of joint authorship, the prize money awarded will be divided equally between the authors. ÌýPlease ensure that contact information, including Banner number, phoneÌýnumber, email and mailing addresses are included in the submission package. Ìý
You are encouraged to edit, revise and improve your case based on the marking comments/ suggestions you received in class.Ìý It is acceptable to change names to protect the privacy of the family being discussed in the case.
Process
A panel of judges with experience in family business, including representatives from the Centre for Family Business and Regional Prosperity Advisory Board, will review the award submissions and develop a shortlist.
If your case is chosen for the shortlist, you will be invited to present it in person to the judging panelÌýduringÌýthe week of March 11 or 18 - date is still to be finalized with the judges. Ìý
Each shortlisted case will be assigned aÌý20-minuteÌýtime slot - approximately 10–15 minutes for your presentation followed by 5 minutes of questions from the judges.ÌýÌýUse of PowerPoint is customary, but not mandatory. ÌýOral presentations should include an overview of the case, issues, analysis and recommendations.
Cases will be scored and winners determined based on the following criteria:
- Quality of the Case
- Clarity of the issues faced
- Analysis of the case
- Linkage with the literatureÌý
- Quality of oral presentation
The winners will be announced at the Rowe School of Business Celebration of Achievement – usually the last Saturday of term.Ìý
