Master of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering

As a biomedical engineering student, you'll typically spend the first eight months of the two-year program working on coursework. You'll spend the remainder of your time working on your thesis.

If you have an undergraduate degree in any engineering, physical science or health science background, you may be accepted into the program, but you might have to make up some undergraduate courses in your first year.

Program requirements

  • Four half-credit graduate-level courses, three of which are the mandatory, core SBME courses and one of which is an elective course.*
  • Successful completion of a written and oral thesis proposal.
  • Attendance and participation (1 presentation) in departmental seminar series.
  • Attendance and participation (minimum of 1 presentation) in the SBME Annual Research Day.
  • Completion and defense of MASc thesis.

* The three required courses are BMNG5062 Biomedical Engineering Foundations I, BMNG5064 Biomedical Engineering Foundations II, and BMNG5066 Biomedical Research Methods and Design. The remaining elective course can be selected from the suite of SBME graduate courses, a graduate course from another department, a senior technical undergraduate course (3000 or 4000 level Science or Engineering course), or a SBME Directed Reading Course.” 

Admission requirements

  • BEng or BASc from an accredited undergraduate engineering program with research experience**
  • Four year BSc in the physical sciences (e.g. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, etc.) with research experience**
  • Four year BSc in the biological sciences (e.g. Physiology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, etc.) with research experience**
  • MD, DVM, DDS, or equivalent with research experience**
       

In cases (3) and (4) above, additional undergraduate coursework may be required prior to entry into the program. This will depend on the nature of the research thesis to be undertaken and the requirements will be developed in consultation with the school.

**Qualifications for research experience include: a research thesis, senior research project, or equivalent work experience determined in consultation with the School of Biomedical Engineering.

A minimum mid-B average during the student’s undergraduate coursework (with a minimum average of A- over the last two years) will be required, plus demonstrated ability to communicate and write in English (consistent with the entry requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, e.g. TOEFL>600).

GRE Aptitude and Advanced scores in one of the sciences are recommended for all applicants whose undergraduate work has been completed outside Canada.

Acceptance is conditional upon finding and confirming a supervisor.

In order to apply, you need to assemble an application package consisting of:

  1. Official academic transcripts. These are usually sent to us directly from the university. You can also include them with your application letter if they're sealed by the originating university.
  2. Two letters of recommendations from references who can attest to your potential as a researcher. These should be submitted via the online application process. Your references will be emailed at the email addresses you provide within five business days after submission. Note that web mail addresses (Gmail, Hotmail etc.), cannot be used for this process.
  3. An application letter outlining your past research experience, research interests and/or a research project of the type you wish to pursue. The names of two or more potential thesis supervisors (see Our Faculty for faculty research interests) should be included in your letter. It's helpful to contact potential supervisors via email prior to applying to discuss possible projects and funding availability.
  4. Results of the TOEFL if your mother tongue isn't English. A minimum score of 600 is required for a paper-based exam, 250 for a computer based exam, or 100 for an Internet-based exam. Where TOEFL is not available, the following tests will be accepted: MELAB (minimum score 90) and IELTS (minimum score 7.5).

PhD in Biomedical Engineering

A PhD in Biomedical Engineering will take you three to five years and involves producing a PhD thesis based on original work. You may apply from a thesis-based master's programs in any health, engineering or physical science discipline.

Program requirements

  • Four, half-credit graduate-level courses in biomedical engineering or related disciplines*, or two if they come from a previous Masters of Biomedical Engineering degree or equivalent approved by the Graduate Coordinator.
  • Successful completion of a written and oral thesis proposal.
  • Successful completion of a written and oral PhD candidacy examination.
  • Attendance and participation (2 presentations) in departmental seminar series.
  • Attendance and participation (minimum of 2 presentations) in the SBME Annual Research Day.
  • Completion and defence of PhD thesis.

*A student can take only one directed reading course as part of their PhD Program.

 

Admission requirements

You may be accepted into the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering from an accredited master's program in the physical sciences, biological sciences or engineering. In such cases, all of the requirements for entry into the MASc program must be satisfied.  Additional courses may be required at the discretion of the School and depending on the nature of the research work to be undertaken.

If you are already in the MASc program, you may transfer to a PhD program after you complete three half-classes and a successful  PhD Transfer Examination.
