It was a great weekend for Dal fans as Tigers teams picked up some important points over the weekend.

Volleyball

After the weekend, the women’s volleyball team is on a four-game winning streak. Last Wednesday they played a rescheduled match against Acadia and swept the Axewomen in three sets. Subway Player of the Game Maggie Li hit 11 kills to lead the Tigers offence along with Louise Facca (10 kills). On defence, Lauren Smith and Raessa Lalani had 15 and 11 digs, respectively. The black and gold went up against the undefeated Saint Mary’s on Sunday, and continued their momentum, upsetting the Huskies 3-1. Losing the first set 25-14, Dal rallied for an impressive 25-9 win in the second set before winning two more. Lalani earned the Subway Player of the Game honours with 13 kills, while Li (11 kills) and Facca (10 kills) also hit double digits. The team will look to continue their streak as they host StFX on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Basketball

Women’s basketball had a huge win at home on Sunday, after facing two losses on the road against the top two teams in AUS standings. Against the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday the Tigers fell short 73-62 with Keisha Brown and Cailin Crosby each banking 16 points. On Friday night in Wolfville, Dal was bested by Acadia 92-67, despite an impressive effort by Brown who collected 25 points. Looking for redemption on home court on Sunday, the team found it in their huge 71-42 victory over StFX. Courtney Thompson scored 16 points to be named Subway Player of the Game and Anna von Maltzahn earned a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. The Tigers will head to UPEI on Saturday to play the Panthers.

It was another nail-biting game for men’s basketball against Saint Mary’s last Wednesday. William Yengue scored a clutch shot with 9.9 seconds left in the game, allowing the Tigers to pull ahead and win 78-76. Yengue earned a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds while Casey Fox had 21 points to lead Dal in scoring. On Friday, the black and gold were unable to carry their momentum against Acadia, falling 99-90 to the Axemen. Fox (18 points) and Yengue (29 points) were offensive forces once again. On Sunday, they faced CIS fourth place StFX on home court and upset the X-Men with a 79-68 win. Robert Nortmann’s 21 points and 14 rebounds earned him Subway Player of the Game honours, while Yengue and Fox added 17 and 16 points each. This Saturday the Tigers travel to UPEI to play one game versus the Panthers.

Hockey

On the road last weekend the men’s hockey team went 0-2 in close match-ups. At UPEI on Friday, the Tigers scored two goals in the first period, but the Panthers came back in the third to score four goals and take the game, 4-2. Pascal Amyot and Francois Gauthier scored for Dal. Facing AUS first place UNB on Saturday, David MacDonald and Brendon MacDonald scored a goal each for the black and gold, sending the game into overtime. The Tigers fought hard, but the Varsity Reds scored to win the game 3-2. This weekend the team will host rematches with UPEI and UNB, playing at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Sitting just one point behind StFX, Dal will be looking to win these games and earn a spot in the playoffs.

In Antigonish on Saturday, the women’s hockey team lost a tough game to the CIS fourth place X-Women 5-0.  Back on home ice on Sunday the Tigers faced the Huskies in a match between cross-town rivals. Rebecca Smyth, Sarah Robichaud, and Cassie Banfield each netted a goal for the black and gold to earn a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary’s. The team hosts Mount Allison on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Track and Field

At the McGill Team Challenge over the weekend, the women’s track and field team placed seventh out of 22 teams. Leading the Tigers, Rebecca Haworth placed first in the high jump and Jordan Leonard won the long jump. Also showing a strong performance, the men’s track and field team placed tenth overall. Top finishers for the black and gold were Justin Blades (first in the 600m) and Simon Watts (second in the high jump). Dal hosts the Super Sunday meet on February 5 at 5 p.m. at Dalplex.
