Men’s Hockey
The Tigers hosted the Acadia Axemen in their home opener last Wednesday night, dropping the CIS no. 6 ranked team 4-3 in a shootout.
Tanner Williams got the scoring started early in the first. Fabian Walsh added another in the first and the Tigers took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Acadia managed to get one past Corbin Boes, tying the game at two apiece headed into the final period.
Walsh got his second of the night and as the clock dwindled down, it looked like the Tigers were going to grab the win until Acadia notched the equalizer with just four seconds left in the game.
With nothing solved in overtime, Brendan Duke scored the lone goal of the shootout, giving the Tigers the 4-3 win. Boes made 47 saves in the game.
On Friday night, they headed Antigonish to battle the StFX X-Men. In a back and forth affair, the X-Men edged out the Tigers 5-4 in overtime.
StFX got on the board in the opening two minutes of the game off a shot from Blake Gal. The two sides would trade goals back and forth in the first period.
After one period of play it was 2-2.
In the second frame, StFX scored two unanswered goals, giving them a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
The Tigers would fight back scoring two goals to bring things into overtime. JP Harvey and Tanner Williams were credited with the goals.
Kristoff Kontos secured the win for StFX scoring three minutes into the overtime period.
The Tigers are now 1-3-1 and will host Moncton on Friday night at the Halifax Forum.
Women’s Hockey
The Tigers headed down the road to face the Saint Mary’s on Wednesday night.
The Huskies struck first, scoring just four minutes into the first period and help a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Saint Mary’s got another goal early in the second, giving them a 2-0 lead. Jesse Rietveld found the back of the net soon after, but that would be it for goals for the rest of the game as the Huskies handed the Tigers their third loss of the regular season.
They recorded their first win of the season just a few days later5-3 victory over Mount Allison on Saturday in Sackville. Sarah Robichaud scored a hat trick in the winning effort.
The ladies found themselves down 1-0 after one period of play, but rallied to score four times in the second period. Robichaud and Corinne Desjardins scored two quick goals in the second period giving the Tigers the lead.
Rosie Heffernan tied things up for Mount Allison half way through the second period but Courtney Sheedy scored just seconds later restoring the Tigers lead. Both sides added another marker before the end of the frame.
The Tigers led 4-3 after two.
Robichaud would complete the hat trick in the third period and gave the Tigers an insurance marker.
The ladies are now 1-3 and will look to build on the win against Saint Mary’s on Wednesday, October 28 in the Tigers home opener.
Men’s Volleyball
The ±«Óãtv Tigers hosted the first AUS-RSEQ Interlock of the season at the Dalplex over the weekend. The Tigers posted a 1-2 record falling to Sherbrooke and Laval.
To start the weekend off, the Tigers took down the University of Montreal in a five-set thriller 3-2 (16-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 16-14). Kristen O’Brien led the Tigers with 18 kills while Adam Sandeson had a team-high 12 digs.
On Saturday afternoon the Tigers fell 16-25, 20-25, 15-25, 25-22 to Sherbrooke. This time it was Connor Maessen leading the Tigers offensively with 10 kills. Sandeson was rock solid defensively again with 12 digs.
Despite the 3-0 (28-30, 22-25, 20-25) loss to Laval on Saturday night, the Tigers were in every set. The duo of Maessen and O’Brien led the Tigers with 22 kills combined.
After a tough weekend by Tigers standards, the boys will look to bounce back on Saturday November 14 when they head to Newfoundland to take on Memorial.
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team was in Quebec this past weekend for a tournament at the University of Laval. The boys were able to take home the championship while going 3-0.
On Friday night, the Tigers cruised to an 82-53 victory over Algoma University. The Tigers led the whole game, jumping out to a first quarter lead and never looked back. Sean Dodds led the Tigers with 14 points.
±«Óãtv kept the momentum going on Saturday with an 84-73 win over Thetford Prep. Sven Stammberger and Kashrell Lawrence led the squad with 14 points and 8 rebounds each.
Securing two wins placed the Tigers in the championship game against the University of Toronto on Sunday afternoon. In a thrilling one-point game, ±«Óãtv was able to squeak out a 73-72 win over the Varsity Blues.
Lawrence was dominant with 26 points, 13 rebounds and three assists and was named tournament MVP for his performance.
After finishing the pre-season with a 9-1 record, the Tigers will look to build on their early success in the regular season. To start the 2015-2016 AUS campaign, the Tigers host UNB on Friday, November 6 at the Dalplex.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team was also at the University of Laval this weekend for a three game set. The ladies posted a 1-2 record and finish the pre-season 3-5.
On Friday night, the Tigers fell to Laval 61-32. ±«Óãtv struggled offensively as Sophie Gaube was the only Tiger in double digits with 13 points. In Saturday’s matchup against the UPEI Panthers, it looked like the Tigers  had a win in the bag carrying a 47-37 lead into the fourth quarter but UPEI went on 29 point run in the final frame, winning 66-65.
Tessa Stammberger put the team on her back posting an incredible 29 points, four rebounds and three assists. No other Tiger had more then 7 points.
In the final game of the weekend, ±«Óãtv was able to grab a win over the University of Toronto. In a low scoring affair the Tigers grinded out a 46-44 W.
Once again it was Stammberger doing it all with 11 points, nine boards and six assists. With 44 points and 21 rebounds over the weekend. Stammberger was named to the tournament all-star team.
The women’s basketball team starts the regular season on November 6 when they host the UNB Varsity Reds.
Women’s Soccer
The women’ soccer team had just one match this weekend against the Cape Breton Capers. The ladies were unable to get on the board in the 3-0 loss.
Keona Simmonds and Chelsea Currie scored two quick goals five minutes apart in the 22nd and 26th minutes. Simmonds would add another in the second half in the 48th minute.
±«Óãtv keeper, Katie Morgan stopped four of the seven shots she faced while April Trowbridge had five shots.
The Tigers are hanging on to the sixth and final playoff spot, with a two-point lead over Mount Allison. They’ll need to secure a fifth place regular season finish to make it to the playoffs as the AUS championship hosts Moncton will receive the sixth spot. They travel to StFX to take on the X-Women Saturday, October 31.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team fell to the Cape Breton Capers on Sunday afternoon 2-0 at Wickwire field.
Justin Maheu and Macro Lapenna both scored for the Capers in the 61st minute and 88th minute.
Jason Ross stopped two shots in the outing. Bezick Evraire had two shots for the Tigers.
The loss moves the Tigers into fifth position in the AUS table with two games remaining. One more point will clinch a playoff berth for the Tigers. Their next chance to do so comes on October 31st against StFX.
