±«Óătv University’s Executive Director of Athletics & Recreation Tim Maloney is pleased to announce Anton Berry as the interim head coach of the ±«Óătv Tigers women’s basketball team for the 2021-22 season.
Berry has a long history of success at local, provincial and national levels.
Currently an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team, Berry has been focused on recruitment and player development since joining the program in June.
Before joining the women’s basketball team, Berry spent seven seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s team, helping lead them to five AUS championship titles and two national medals including a silver last year. He also helped lead summer camps and academies while with the men’s team.
“We are thrilled to have Anton lead our women’s basketball program into the 2021-22 season,” says Maloney. “Anton’s work ethic, experience, integrity and passion for ±«Óătv basketball will position him for success in this role while being a strong contributor to our team in Athletics & Recreation.”
Originally from Dartmouth, Berry played the 2001-02 season with the Memorial Sea-Hawks before transferring to the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association’s Mount Saint Vincent University where he played three seasons. Berry was also a member of the 2001 Nova Scotia Canada Summer Games men’s basketball team.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and honoured to represent such a distinguished institution,” says Berry. “I am committed to work endlessly and to make the sacrifices needed to build on the program’s rich history.”
Berry’s immediate focus will be on building relationships with current players and recruiting new student-athletes to the program.
“Following in the footsteps of legendary Coach Anna (Stammberger) won't be an easy task. I have tremendous respect for her, and I look forward to working with her during this transition. I would like to thank Tim Maloney for this opportunity and my wife, family, friends, and mentors for their continued support, guidance, and encouragement.”
A teacher at Dartmouth High School since 2013 and their athletic director since 2015, Berry coached at Cole Harbour High school from 2011 to 2013. He has been the Metro High School Athletic Association men’s basketball league coordinator since 2015. Berry got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant coach from 2007 to 2009 with the Mount Saint Vincent University men’s basketball team under current Tigers men’s basketball head coach Rick Plato and has also worked with the Halifax Community YMCA basketball program and Basketball Nova Scotia’s Canada Games development team. He is currently participating in Sport Nova Scotia’s Black and Indigenous Coach Mentorship program.
Berry will continue his role as assistant coach for the remainder of the 2020-21 season and will assume the reins as head coach starting April 1, 2021.
