WORK ASSIGNMENT:Ìý The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching NURS 1240.03: Introduction to Nursing Practice during the Summer Term, 2014. Responsibilities include delivery of course content, holding office hours, and the evaluation of the students.Ìý Responsibilities also include coordination and collaboration with the Coordinator of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Center in the planning of topics and practice time for students and, acting as a liaison with Coordinator for clinical instructors. This position is supported by a Teaching Assistant.

This course is designed to introduce students to healthcare settings where they interact with older adults at various levels of health. Learning experiences are designed to promote beginning knowledge and skills for the practice of nursing with an emphasis on helping relationships.

The format of the course will be comprised of lecture/lab and clinical: 40 hours/week for 5 weeks from May 5 – June 6, 2014. The Part-time Academic reports directly to Dr. Mary van Soeren, Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Candidates must be a Registered Nurse and hold a graduate degree in a health related discipline with relevant expertise and teaching experience. PhD preferred.

This course is designed to focus on nursing practice in the care of children and families. The determinants of child and family healthcare are examined, as well as the role of nursing practice in health promotion and illness prevention for children, Clinical and family issues associated with childhood illness and hospitalization draw on knowledge of child and family development as well as the art and science of nursing knowledge. Students work in clinical settings where care is provided to children and families experiencing illness.

The format of the course will be comprised of a 2 hour lecture and a total of 78 clinical hours from June 23 – July 11, 2014. The Part-time Academic reports directly to Dr. Mary van Soeren, Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies.

Guided by principles of primary healthcare, students focus on families and family health with an emphasis on a thorough understanding of family assessment and developing family therapeutic relationship skills. Students examine family health and health issues from a nursing, cultural, sociological, psychological and other theoretical perspectives as they relate to nursing practice that focuses on working with families in all settings. Upon completion of the course, students will have developed competencies required to use a systems approach when working with families. Laboratory and clinical experiences that include visiting families in their homes provide the students with opportunities to integrate, discuss and practice family nursing.
