Job Posting: Instructor, 75% FTE transition year program

INSTRUCTOR, 75% FTE TRANSITION YEAR PROGRAM, COLLEGE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION

Applications are invited for a 75%, career stream appointment at the Instructor Level.

Specific duties will include the following:
* Teach courses “Strategies for University Learning” and “Academic Writing.”
* Prepare class syllabi for both courses.
* Be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures, test preparation, evaluation and electronic submission of grades.
* Tutor students and assist them in writing papers by editing, providing feedback on grammar and structure of paper.
* Refer students to Counselling Services for testing on learning disabilities when appropriate.
* Provide tutorials and individual support as needed.
* Assist Director in ensuring that TYP curriculum remains culturally relevant and adequately prepares students for admission to ±«Óătv.
* Assess individual student progress and provide feedback in order to assist students to successfully master post secondary course materials.
* Act as advisor to TYP graduates taking regular credit courses. Contact professor as needed. Maintain liaison with instructors of TYP courses to ensure courses remains relevant to students.
* Mark assignments, calculate interim and final grades.
* Acts as Student Advisor to several students per year.
* Attend biweekly staff meetings and report on Student progress.
* Participate and organize admissions committee meetings and review files in conjunction with Director; interview potential students of TYP.
* Organize and facilitate (with Director) TYP orientation sessions that occur each July and September.
* Research and write on issues relevant to TYP such as student learning styles, issues facing TYP students, and strategies for retention and recruitment.
* Act in absence of Director when necessary.
* Provide academic counselling to students in TYP; recommends tutoring for students when necessary.
* Maintain contact with TYP graduates, mentoring when necessary.
* With Director, organize bi-annual conference on TYP, professional development and issues related to African Canadian and Aboriginal learning, retention, recruitment, math, science and other issues as they arise.
* Other related duties as required

Must have sound understanding of Aboriginal and African Canadian students’ challenges and background to assist them to learn complex material, a high degree of patience and the ability to teach material in a variety of ways. Minimum qualifications for this position include a graduate degree in a relevant field, and demonstrated teaching success at the university level
