Undergraduate Student Part-time Position
Antibiotic Reduction in Poultry Production
Supervisor: Dr. Deborah Adewole, Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture
Location: Faculty of Agriculture, ±«Óãtv University, Truro, NS
Project: The elimination of antimicrobial growth promoters in feed for poultry has significantly increased the incidence of infections by pathogens, consequently having detrimental effect on the birds' performance. With the anticipated ban of preventive use of clinically-important antibiotics in poultry production in Canada, controlling enteric infections becomes perplexing and there is an urgent need to consider the use of natural alternatives. The objectives of my projects are to investigate dietary and management strategies to increase productivity and reduce the incidences of diseases in poultry production. The research will investigate the use of various fiber ingredients and bioactive feed additives and different delivery strategies as alternatives to the use of antibiotics in broiler chicken production.
Responsibilities: Literature search and literature review on specific topics in poultry nutrition and gut health, experiment planning, monitoring, feeding, and weighing of broiler chickens, diet mixing, proximate analysis, and other tasks assigned.
Qualifications: Third or fourth-year student in Agriculture with Interest in poultry nutrition and health.

Qualifications: The applicant must meet the criteria for admission to the M.Sc. program, which includes a B.Sc. (Honours) in Agriculture, Animal Science or a related field. The applicant must also have a minimum of 73% GPA in the last two years of study. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential
Desired Requirements: Sound academic and research background in gut microbiome, molecular biology or immunology. Experience with DNA extraction and sequencing, real time PCR, and Bioinformatics is desired. Special consideration will be given to Candidates who have experience with the poultry industry.
