Carbon Neutrality Forum
Canada has pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, transitioning from fossil fuel energy to greener, renewable sources. CO2Ìýand Methane are two the two most potent gasses contributing to global warming. CO2Ìýemissions are from cities, industry and agriculture. Ìý±«Óãtv University has been asked by the Federal and Provincial governments to host a national and international forum examining Carbon Neutrality in Atlantic and Eastern Canada. The Forum will be held April 19-20th 2023, with representatives from across Canada and the globe.Ìý The event will include meetings and presentations over two days. Speakers from outside Halifax who are not able to travel are invited to join online.
This Forum will help the provinces and federal government, along with industry and academia, develop the best practices and review the latest technical developments on reducing emissions and related impacts. From this, guidelines for a comprehensive regulatory framework can be developed. This includes characterizing the potential of reservoirs and pore space for sequestering CO2Ìý. The Forum will meet the objectives of NRCan in relation to disseminating best practices and new technological advances that will help countries reduce the impacts of emissions, and promote the storage and use of captured CO2Ìý in reservoirs, and other deep geological formations such as saline aquifers.Ìý In Canada, CCUS research and implementation has been focused in the west, yet the CO2Ìýstorage potential of sedimentary basins surrounding Atlantic CanadaÌýis potentially great (UNECE 2021).
Sharing best practices and technologies that may lessen costs and promote Canada’s vision of a cleaner energy future, helping guide Canada to carbon neutrality.
