Megan Longley, KC, (LLB'94) has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to making justice accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status.

She has worked tirelessly to bridge the gaps in the legal system that often leave vulnerable individuals without representation or support, and her advocacy for systemic change has played a crucial role in shaping a more just and equitable legal system for the people of Nova Scotia.

Longley's professional journey is a testament to excellence in the legal field. She has held various leadership roles as a trial lawyer, managing lawyer, service delivery director, and CEO of Nova Scotia Legal Aid, representing clients at all levels of Nova Scotia’s courts. As the executive director of ±«Óãtv Legal Aid Service, she not only leads with distinction but also mentors and guides senior law students, helping to shape the next generation of legal professionals.

Marian McGrath (LLB'79) has exhibited extraordinary dedication and compassion in her efforts to address some of society's most pressing issues, including homelessness, poverty, and inadequate housing.

Throughout her distinguished career in public service, she has held senior roles within the federal Department of Justice, including general counsel for the Department of National Defence and deputy executive director of the Office of the Legal Advisor to the Canadian Forces. After retiring, she continued to contribute her legal expertise with the Law Society of Ontario and various organizations, such as the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa.

A passionate advocate for reconciliation, she has played a key role in fostering dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, respecting Indigenous history and traditions while creating opportunities for meaningful conversations. She has also been a steadfast supporter of refugees, offering financial assistance, personal mentorship, and guidance.

James Michael, KC, (LLB'92)'s journey as the first Mi'kmaq person to graduate from law school and be called to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society continues to inspire and empower the next generation of Mi'kmaq lawyers, advocates, and community leaders.

Throughout his career, Michael has been unwavering in his commitment to advancing Mi'kmaq and Indigenous rights, both in Nova Scotia and across Canada. His work with the Treaty and Aboriginal Rights Research Centre, including his involvement in landmark cases like the Marshall Fishing case, has been pivotal in securing justice and recognition for Indigenous communities.

His dedication goes far beyond his professional accomplishments. Rooted in a deep personal connection to his community's struggles and aspirations, he has used his legal expertise to make the legal system more inclusive and reflective of Indigenous experiences. 

Dr. Bill Rand (LLB'66, LLD'11)'s legacy exemplifies his commitment to excellence and his dedication to making a lasting, positive impact—both in his own life and in the lives of others.

With a strong foundation in corporate and securities law, Rand spent nearly 25 years practicing in the mining industry before transitioning into venture capital and investment. There, he played an instrumental role in supporting and growing emerging businesses, particularly those in resource-based sectors.

In addition to his achievements as a lawyer and businessman, he has made a significant impact as a mentor to young professionals and emerging entrepreneurs. Through his work with Edgar Capital Corporation, he has offered invaluable guidance to the next generation of leaders, inspiring others to give back to their communities.
