Undergraduate Programs
Why choose to study French at ±«Óãtv?
We’ve taught French at ±«Óãtv since the 1840‘s. We granted our first MA in French in 1946 and we are the only university in Atlantic Canada to offer degrees in French up to the doctoral level. This means our French program provides a depth of resources, choice and diversity few other universities in the region can offer. Students learn fluency in French and can study a wide variety of cultures and literatures of the French-speaking world.Â
We are a friendly, tight-knit department where faculty, graduate and undergraduate students get to know one another and participate in many French-speaking activities including guest lectures, film nights, pot-luck parties, crepe breakfasts, vin et fromage, and other events.
French opens the doors to a number of careers including: lawyer, teacher, translator, journalist, professor, foreign service officer, speech-language pathologist, intergovernmental affairs officer, import/export broker, linguist, and diplomat, to name just a few.
As one of Canada’s two official languages, proficiency in French gives you a distinct edge for careers in a number of fields. French is the official working language at the United Nations, UNESCO, NATO, the EU and the International Red Cross.
