One‑Minute Meeting with Kim Stewart

Posted by Communications, Marketing and Creative Services on January 6, 2022 in Community Highlights

Three questions, each answered in 150 words or less. One-Minute Meeting is a quick and easy way to get to know more about your colleagues, new and old. Learn how you can nominate someone at the bottom of this post.

Today's meeting is with Kim Stewart, a Registration Officer on the Student Services Team with the Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Dal?
Ìý
My favourite thing about working at Dal has been the people I have met along the way, be they staff members, people I’ve worked with in our Union (the NSGEU), Supervisors, Faculty Members, Instructors, Members of Central Admin. or the various Facilities Management folks who have looked after all the buildings I have worked at on campus. And last, but not least, all the students and parents to whom I have been able to provide support in all the departments I have worked in.

When you're feeling tired or worn out, what is your go-to strategy for regaining balance?

I have several strategies I go to. First off, I have always started my day with Quiet Time where I read my Bible and pray. With all the screen time we’ve had since working remotely, I’ve adapted it now to listen to videos and podcasts of my favourite Bible teachers. I love listening to music but Jazz music in particular. It immediately calms me. Another activity I enjoy is washing dishes by hand. It is a mindful activity that gives me a lot of satisfaction. I love the smell of the dish soap. The way the dishes squeak when they are clean and focusing on getting them really clean. Also, at the end of a hard day I love watching my favourite soap, Coronation Street. I have been watching it since 1970.
Ìý
What’s the most surprising thing we might see on your resume/cv?
Ìý

The most surprising thing on my resume is that I have a Bachelor of Arts in French from ±«Óãtv. Other than a short stint at an Electronic Newsclipping Service called Mediascan back when I first graduated in 1984, I have never been able to find a job at Dal that matched what I wanted to do when I first graduated. After a period of unemployment in 1985, a friend told me about working at Dal; and, back then, I knew how to type; and, the rest as they say is history. I’ve never taken any formal Clerical/Administrative courses but have worked in this field going on 35 years now.

Now, nominate someone you'd like to see on One-Minute Meeting.
